Penicillins
- Name
- Penicillins
- Accession Number
- DBCAT000702 (DBCAT000739, DBCAT003326)
- Description
A group of antibiotics that contain 6-aminopenicillanic acid with a side chain attached to the 6-amino group. The penicillin nucleus is the chief structural requirement for biological activity. The side-chain structure determines many of the antibacterial and pharmacological characteristics. (Goodman and Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 8th ed, p1065)

Drug Drug Description Cloxacillin An antibiotic agent used for the treatment of beta-hemolytic streptococcal and pneumococcal infections as well as staphylococcal infections. Pivmecillinam A prodrug of the beta lactam antibiotic mecillinam, indicated for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). Flucloxacillin A narrow spectrum penicillin antibiotic that exerts specific activity against Gram positive organisms in skin and soft tissue infections, except those caused by methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Ampicillin A penicillin derivative used for the treatment of a variety of infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as some anaerobes. Phenoxymethylpenicillin A penicillin antibiotic used to prevent and treat mild to moderately severe infections in the respiratory tract, skin, and soft tissues. Dicloxacillin A penicillin used to treat penicillinase-producing bacterial infections that are susceptible to the drug. Carbenicillin For the treatment of acute and chronic infections of the upper and lower urinary tract and in asymptomatic bacteriuria due to susceptible strains of bacteria. Nafcillin A penicillin derivative antibiotic used to treat susceptible staphylococcal infections. Oxacillin A penicillin antibiotic used to treat a number of susceptible bacterial infections. Benzylpenicilloyl polylysine A penicillin derivative used to determine penicillin allergies. Cyclacillin For the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Benzylpenicillin A penicillin used for the treatment of infections caused by gram-positive cocci, in particular streptococcal infections. This form of penicillin is typically used in intravenous or long-acting injectable formulations due to poor oral absorption. Amoxicillin A penicillin derivative used for the treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria, in particular streptococcal bacteria causing upper respiratory tract infections. Amdinocillin Used in the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by some strains of E. coli and klebsiella and enterobacter species. Used mainly against Gram negative organisms. Bacampicillin An ampicillin prodrug used to treat various susceptible bacterial infections in the body, such as respiratory infections and skin and subcutaneous tissue infections. Meticillin Used to treat infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, particularly beta-lactamase-producing organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus that would otherwise be resistant to most penicillins. Ticarcillin A beta lactam antibiotic used to treat a variety of infections in the body. Azidocillin For treatment of infection (Respiratory, GI, UTI and meningitis) due to E. coli, P. mirabilis, enterococci, Shigella, S. typhosa and other Salmonella, nonpenicillinase-producing N. gononhoeae, H. influenzae, staphylococci, streptococci including... Carindacillin A penicillin antibiotic used to treat a variety of infections, but is no longer marketed in the USA. Procaine benzylpenicillin A local anesthetic and antibiotic combination for intramuscular injection to treat a variety of bacterial infections while reducing pain from a deep intramuscular injection. Sultamicillin A mutual prodrug of ampicillin and sulbactam useful in the treatment of infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. Piperacillin A penicillin antibiotic combined with tazobactam to treat piperacillin-resistant, piperacillin/tazobactam susceptible, β-lactamase generating strains of several bacteria. Mezlocillin Used to treat serious gram–negative infections of the lungs, urinary tract, and skin. Azlocillin For the treatment of infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Haemophilus influenzae. Pivampicillin An ampicillin prodrug used to treat a variety of infections. Talampicillin Not Annotated Aspoxicillin Not Annotated Pheneticillin Pheneticillin (or phenethicillin) is a penicillin antibiotic which is approved for use internationally. Hetacillin Hetacillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic prodrug used to treat bacterial infections. In the body it gets converted to ampicillin.
